By-Law Officers

About Us

Commissionaires BC, together with the Fraser Valley Regional District, provides quality Animal Control/Bylaw Enforcement services throughout the Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Kent, Harrison Hot Springs, and Mission areas. This service is run through the Chilliwack Community Animal Response and Education (C.A.R.E.) Centre.

Whether it’s a lost, stray or impounded dog, our team works hard to provide a loving environment for all animals brought into our care. We do much more than provide shelter – we engage with our animals, assist in finding them their forever-homes through pet adoption services, and go the extra mile in ensuring their health is optimized.

We are active members of our local communities, and take pride in enforcing local bylaws to keep residents and animals safe. We are currently recruiting for various positions, including an Animal Control Officer, Kennel Attendant and Bylaw Services Coordinator that will work in this challenging, yet rewarding environment within the Fraser Valley area.

You’re a good fit if…
You have a passion for the well-being of animals
You have a knack for educating the public on Animal Bylaws
You have previous Bylaw experience
You have experience with handling various dog breeds and behaviours

Some of your daily tasks include:
Attending all requests for service dispatched by the Bylaw Service Coordinators
Investigating alleged bylaw contraventions
Gathering evidence to support bylaw infractions and maintain supporting documentation
Apprehending and transporting dogs
Examining apprehended animals for medical concerns and identification
Managing disease control including the isolation of ill animals, recommendations for treatment, cleaning and preventative measures
Providing information on bylaws and procedures
Assigning dog licences to dog owners
Providing reports to the Supervisor as requested
Maintaining written correspondence via Microsoft Office and TEMPEST software

Your ‘Must-Haves’:
You have previous experience and training in animal handling, including apprehending, restraining, disease control and animal welfare
You pride yourself on your exceptional customer service and conflict resolution experience
You have the knowledge of principles and methods used in handling aggressive, stray, ill or injured animals
You have the ability to maintain detailed records
You have the ability to deal tactfully and responsibly with public inquiries and complaints
You are fluent in English (written, verbal and reading)
You have an ability to interpret and explain Animal Control Bylaw policies and regulations
You have basic MS Office skills
You are able to pass a Criminal Record Check
You are physically fit with an ability to carry a minimum of 50 lbs
You are available for on-call shift rotation

Your ‘Nice-to-Haves’:

Experience handling livestock and poultry
