Safety: Safety is one of BC Transits core values. As the operator of large piece of heavy machinery - a transit bus - the right candidate must be able to adhere to safety protocols and practices at all times. In addition, using good judgement to be mindful of keeping BC Transit riders safe while on-board is one of the Transit Operators primary concerns.


Customer Service: A Transit Operator must exemplify another of BC Transits core values - customer service - as the face of the company and one who interacts with passengers every day. BC Transit riders are a diverse group of customers with a wide range of abilities, cultures, backgrounds and familiarity with the Victoria region and its transit system. A Transit Operator is someone who is courteous, friendly, respectful and willing to go above and beyond to help passengers.


Communication/ Conflict Resolution: Sometimes Transit Operators will be faced with challenging situations and will need to use their strong verbal communication skills to diffuse a situation and find a resolution without causing further escalation. The ability to stay calm when presented with angry or upset customers is key.


Judgement/ Problem Solving: As a Transit Operator, each day may bring different scenarios, which will require you to use your problem solving skills. Being able to bring timely solutions to circumstances, sometimes with a limited number of tools at your disposal, is important while on the road. That being said, a Transit Operator needs to be able to assess when asking for assistance is an appropriate part of their problem solving.


Ability to Handle Stress: The work of a Transit Operator exists in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment, sometimes with interactions that can be stressful. On a day-to-day basis you may experience near-accidents, upset customers, traffic jams, or driving in adverse weather conditions. The ability to remain calm and in control when in these situations is a must for a Transit Operator.


Physical Demands and Work Environment


The physical demands of a Transit Operator most often require manual handling of loads between 5 kg and 15 kg. Manual handling requirements are considered to occur on a rare basis throughout the work day/week. Physical demands may include but are not limited to, activities such as:


Assisting with securing bikes on/off the bike racks; lifting/lowering the bike racks; and securing customers in wheelchairs and scooters


Reaching between shoulder and ground level to assist/serve customers, access emergency exits/hatches, secure/strap scooters and wheelchairs; or steer and adjust mirrors etc.


Rotating the neck and spine to shoulder check, view travel path and greet customers.


Squatting, crouching or kneeling to secure wheelchairs and scooters and conduct pre and post trip inspections.


Sustained sitting while driving


Navigating steps and stairs to access the buses, including staircases in bi-level bus designs.


Extended exposure to an indoor environment (95 % of the work is completed inside the bus)


Working outside to complete pre/post trip inspections if a bus breaks down on a route or to assist passengers when needed.


Working in close proximity of moving traffic.


Exposure to noise (running bus engine, air brakes, radio, background dialogue of riders, traffic noise, etc); vibration (associated with operation of the bus); and odours (exhaust fumes; pets/animals confined in carriers and/or service animals; passenger fragrances/perfumes and/or conditions associated with passenger personal hygiene).


Exposure to inclement weather conditions.


Interactions with the public in various situations; most public interactions occur inside the bus.

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


To be considered for employment as a Transit Operator, applications must meet the following minimum qualifications:


Willing and able to work shifts (both straight and split shifts) anytime within BC Transits operating hours (22 hours each day with shifts beginning as early as 4am and ending as late as 2:45am) with non-traditional and sometimes undefined breaks. All shifts and work adhere to National Safety Code standards.


Clearly demonstrated customer service skill set including conflict resolution, problem solving and sound decision-making.


2 years non-learners driving experience if not a current commercial licence holder.


5 years Claims Experience Summary dated within the past 14 days with no more than 1 at-fault claim in the past 5 years. Preference will be given to those with a clear Summary.


National (N) and Provincial (P) drivers abstracts, each dated within the past 14 days indicating safe and responsible vehicle operation over the past 5 years with no more than 3 points in the past 3 years and no more than 1 violation in the past 5 years. Preference will be given to those with a clear driving background.


A valid drivers licence any one of these options are acceptable:(Option 1) Class 5 and Class 2 Learners with the #15 air brake restriction/endorsement temporarily added to Learners for the purpose of this application. Ability to pass a comprehensive ICBC medical examination relating to the Motor Vehicle Act requirement for a Class 2 drivers licence and capable of, after on-the-job training, holding a Class 2 drivers licence.


No criminal convictions or pending charges relating directly to the Transit Operator position.


Ability to understand, speak and write English in order to comprehend BC Transit policies, effectively communicate with the traveling public and report on incidents involving safety and/or service.


A good knowledge of the Greater Victoria area is an asset.


Wages and Benefits


The Transit Operator position is a full-time, 40 hour per week position. Work and vacation is chosen on a seniority basis through a sign-up process, which occurs four times per year. Your work assignment and your days off will be directly related to what is available at the time your seniority permits you to sign up. The wage schedule as per the Unifor Local 333 BC Collective Agreement effective April 04, 2016 is as follows:


$17.49- Training (Weeks 1-9)


$19.78- First Year (Weeks 10-61)


$21.55- Second Year (Weeks 62-113)


$23.49- Third Year (Weeks 114-165)


$25.42- Fourth Year (Weeks 166-217)


$29.28- Fifth Year (Weeks 218+)
