Village Of Alert Bay

Alert Bay may only have a population of 1200, but there's always something on the go.  Exciting annual events include June Sports on Father's Day weekend, and SeaFest, MusicFest, the Salmon Run and the Alert Bay 360 on the August long weekend.

Alert Bay is on Cormorant Island which is four km long, and about one km wide at its narrowest point. Today, the 'Namgis First Nation has the largest population on the island, with 500-600 people.  The Village of Alert Bay has a population of 440 people, and the remainder of the island's population lives in the Whe-la-la-u, which represents several First Nations groups, and theRegional District of Mount Waddington.

There are two elementary schools, the Alert Bay School and the T'lisalagi'lakw School.  Grade 8-12 students take a foot ferry across to Port McNeill to attend high school.  Some locals also take the ferry across to Vancouver Island for work, while many work for the 'Namgis First Nation, BC Ferries, and local businesses.  You'll still see working seine boats in the Alert Bay Harbour.
